Artist Statement

Through this body of work, I wanted to explore the connection between science and art through perception. As someone who enjoys both, it’s frustrating that they are usually viewed as separate entities. So, I wanted to connect my understanding of science, particularly related to the brain and perception, to my artwork. I experimented through using different materials, concepts, and methods of interaction that challenge how you think about perception or how you alter your perception. While creating my sustained investigation, I particularly wanted to use photography as a base for each piece because photography is already a process that is used to highlight different perceptions of the world through the photographer’s lens. The technology in a camera mirrors how our eyes perceive images and light, thus already turning science into artwork. “Rods and Cones” was the catalyst for my investigation being an abstract representation of perception where I took photography and directly connected it with the eye. From this piece I continued to play with senses visually and physically, anatomically and abstractly, directly and through illusion, all intertwining the science of perception through perception in art.
